Solis Seeks Consecutive Senorita Stakes Victories

Share

When Miss Vegas beat Ticker Tape by a head to win the Senorita Stakes a year ago, it was the third win in the Grade III race for jockey Alex Solis.

Solis will try for consecutive victories in the $100,000 affair, which will be run for the 37th time today at Hollywood Park, when he rides Three Degrees against nine other 3-year-old fillies.

Owned by a partnership and trained by Pat Gallagher, Three Degrees has won her two starts in the United States after going 0 for 2 in England.

Her victories came at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill course at Santa Anita and the Senorita marks her first try beyond seven furlongs.

With her pedigree, Three Degrees shouldn’t mind more distance. She’s by Singspiel and out of the Beau Genius mare Miss University.

Garrett Gomez, who won the Senorita with Fantastic Filly in 2001 and in 2002 with Adoration, will ride Royal Copenhagen this afternoon.

Owned by Richard Duchossois and trained by Laura de Seroux, the French-bred is winless in four starts in this country but has been second in three of those defeats.

Race of the day: Con Quixote, who has won eight of 25 starts, will make his first appearance since July 3 at Pleasanton in today’s seventh on the closing-day card at Bay Meadows.

Russell Baze will ride the 7-year-old gray son of Restless Con for trainer Chuck Peery in the $50,000 optional claimer at five furlongs on turf. Con Quixote has a win and a second in three races on grass.

One for the road: Caiman makes his first start after being claimed by high-percentage trainer Scott Lake and should improve significantly in today’s seventh at Belmont Park.

Aaron Gryder will ride the 4-year-old Malibu Moon colt, who was taken for $50,000 on March 11 at Gulfstream Park, in the $50,000 optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

Exotically speaking: An early pick four using Preachinatthebar and Melanyhasthepapers in the first, Judge Gallivan, Sum Time Angel and Royal Falcon in the second, Silver Dawn and Skipping Court in the third and Gone Quiet, Roy’s Last Roar and Souvenir Zone in the fourth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/35. Money: Previous day/meet total: $18.20/$185.80. Total money bet: $210.
