Hoping to forestall closure of half its 42 community centers, the city is proposing turning them over to nonprofit groups.
The plan would allow the San Jose Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department to consolidate its 75-person community center staff and save nearly $600,000.
Park officials have identified 32 centers that could be leased by nonprofit groups, community organizations or for-profit service providers.
The groups would pay rent, maintain buildings and provide community services.
