L.A. Citizens Greet Their New Mayor

Share

Re “Villaraigosa Landslide,” May 18: I am delighted that the voters of Los Angeles have seen their way clear to send Jim Hahn packing. He never had the vision that the mayor of the largest city in California and the second-largest city in this country needs to be an effective mayor. He never had a feel for what the people of Los Angeles wanted and needed. It was one thing to spout rhetoric about hiring more police to make the city safe, but the reality was that he cut spending for programs that truly affected all citizens.

After moving to San Francisco one year ago and experiencing a truly dynamic mayor, I can only say that L.A. is lucky to have an incoming mayor who better fits the needs of Angelenos. Way to go, Antonio!

I held my nose and voted for Hahn because he supported raising the city sales tax to hire more cops and Villaraigosa opposed it for no other logical reason than that Hahn supported it. However, I would have held my nose just as tight if I had voted for Villaraigosa. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Neither one has the market cornered on ethics or truth when it comes to their political histories or campaigns. It sure would have been nice to have had someone to vote for whom I would have actually wanted to see as mayor, instead of the farce of an election that we just went through.

I say let’s save some money next election and just find a candidate that no one likes and give him or her the keys to the city. Oh wait, that’s what we just did.

Thank you for not voting. By not voting you have increased the power of my vote. If only 25% vote, my vote counts as four votes. If only 10% vote, I get 10 times the power! If nobody else votes, I will rule the world!

Re “Rosendahl Wins Westside Seat,” May 18: Bill Rosendahl has earned the 11th District Council seat, and it could be argued that some of those voting for him did so, in part, as a backlash to his opponent’s transparent gay-bashing.

From her constant mentioning during the primary that she was the only candidate with a family, to her presumptuous and exclusive yard signs proclaiming “Another Family for Flora,” Krisiloff took the low road from Day One. Too bad, because she was eminently qualified in every other area.

As for my own family, my wife and I voted for Rosendahl because he visited our house in Westchester, shook my hand and promised, among other things, to fight Mayor James Hahn’s $10-billion airport expansion plan.
