Angara Will Try to Keep Streak Alive at Belmont

Share

Since being treated with Lasix, Angara has been unbeatable.

Third and fourth in her first two races in this country at Santa Anita earlier this year, the 4-year-old Alzao filly was given the anti-bleeding medication for the first time when debuting at Keeneland on April 16.

Well off the pace early in the 1 1/8 -mile race, Angara flew home in the final eighth of a mile to win going away at 7-2 and returned 11 days later to win the Bewitch, a Grade III, by nearly two lengths at 1 1/2 miles.

Owned by Martin Schwartz and trained by Patrick Biancone, Angara will try to keep the streak going as she steps into a Grade II in this afternoon’s $150,000 Sheepshead Bay Handicap at Belmont Park.

Gary Stevens, who was aboard the English-bred for her wins at Keeneland, retains the mount against seven others in the 1 3/8 -mile race. Sauvage, Kate Winslet, Barancella, Minge Cove, Finery, Dreams Come True and Honey Ryder complete the field. Both Barancella and Dreams Come True are California shippers trained by Bobby Frankel.

Race of the day: Wild Uncle Kurt, who won by 2 1/2 lengths at first asking for owner Heinz Steinmann and trainer Mike Harrington on May 1, will try to become a stakes winner in today’s $75,000 Willard L. Proctor Memorial at Hollywood Park. Isaias Enriquez will ride the 2-year-old Swiss Yodeler colt against Risen River, Tiza Royal Cat, Corazondelcampeon, The Missile Came, Crowning Caper and June’s Prince in the five-furlong Proctor. Wild Uncle Kurt is the only horse in the race with a win beyond two furlongs. He won going 4 1/2 furlongs.

One for the road: Proud Patrolman is sharp again for trainer Mark Ingebritson and proved last time he could handle the turf, so he can make it three wins in a row in today’s fifth at Golden Gate Fields. Frank Alvarado will ride the 7-year-old Proud Irish gelding in the $12,500 claimer at five furlongs on grass.

Exotically speaking: A late pick four using General Antonio in the sixth, The Missile Came, Wild Uncle Kurt and Corazondelcampeon in the seventh, Remo, Athlete and Crosscut in the eighth and Nucaya, Six Cents Of Humor, Rush Zone and L.A. Tootie in the ninth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/57. Money: Previous day/meet total: $6.60/$299.60. Total money bet: $382.
