The Dodgers on Tuesday put left-handed starter Odalis Perez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 15, purchased the contract of right-hander Buddy Carlyle from triple-A Las Vegas and moved Jose Valentin to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Carlyle on the 40-man roster.

Carlyle, who was on the team’s opening-day roster but designated for assignment May 3, is a candidate to start Saturday at Arizona. Rookie right-hander D.J. Houlton is also under consideration, though he threw two innings Tuesday. The Dodgers could make another move before the weekend.

“We want to see how the next couple of days go,” Manager Jim Tracy said, alluding to who is needed out of the bullpen against the Giants. Tracy also said he should have a “tentative” name in place by Thursday. “That would give the pitcher time to prepare,” he said.

At Las Vegas, Carlyle was 0-1 with a 6.59 earned-run average in three starts, striking out 16 batters in 13 2/3 innings.

“I’m confident in the way I’m throwing the ball even if the numbers don’t show it,” Carlyle said. “That’s better than having [good] numbers and being lucky.”

With Wilson Alvarez, 35, making his first start of the season tonight, Tracy said he is hoping to get “65-70” pitches out of the left-hander and reiterated that Alvarez would not make more than two consecutive starts. “We’re running the risk of injury with him,” Tracy said.

Alvarez, who began the season on the disabled list with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder, said he felt fine physically. “If they want me to start every five days, give me the ball,” he said. “I’m at the point of my career now where I don’t care where I pitch; I just want to pitch.”

Jayson Werth, whose 20-day rehab stint at Las Vegas ends today, was four for four with a homer and five RBIs on Tuesday.

Tracy said he had “a great chat” with demoted starter Scott Erickson about the right-hander moving to the bullpen, saying Erickson, who has only appeared in relief five times in 369 career games, was OK with the move.

Spanish-language radio broadcaster Fernando Valenzuela has been invited by Mexicali to pitch a second year in the Mexican winter league.

“They’ve already put me on the roster,” said Valenzuela, who was 2-2 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs with a 4.02 ERA for Mexicali.

“I’m not 100% yes, but I’ll think about it. It’s fun, the season’s short and it’s close to home.”
