Monique Henderson may have an Olympic gold medal, but she still wants an NCAA track title.

The UCLA senior came a step closer to her goal on Saturday when she easily outran the competition in the 200- and 400-meter events at the NCAA West Regional at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene.

Henderson will run in both events at the NCAA championships June 8-11 in Sacramento. The Bruin women are the defending national team champions, but Henderson, surprisingly, hasn’t won a national individual title.

Henderson ran her season-best in the 400 meters well ahead of the rest of the field in 50.78 seconds. She ran the 200 in 22.72 -- just before the cloudy skies crackled with thunder. Severe weather delayed events later in the afternoon.

The top five finishers in each individual event and the top three in the relay receive automatic berths to Sacramento. Top-eight finishers will be considered for at-large bids.

USC’s Wes Felix won the men’s 200 meters in 20.58. Fellow Trojan Virginia Powell, one of the top hurdlers in the country, won the 100-meter hurdles in 12.81. She won the 60-meter hurdles at this year’s NCAA indoor championships.

In the men’s 800 meters, Washington sophomore Ryan Brown beat UCLA senior Jon Rankin in a very close race. Brown’s winning time was 1:48.191, while Rankin was timed at 1:48.195.

USC’s Jesse Williams cleared 7 feet 4 1/2 inches to win the high jump.

AC Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti said that “false reports” about his team celebrating a 3-0 halftime lead during the Champions League final against Liverpool hurt more the eventual defeat.

Ancelotti and captain Paolo Maldini denied a story in Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport that halftime celebrations by Milan players inspired Liverpool to rally to 3-3 and win Wednesday’s match on penalty kicks.
