Washburn Feeling a Little Bit Lucky

In one of the bigger upsets of the season, Jarrod Washburn’s six-inning, three-run, eight-hit performance against the White Sox on Monday was considered a “quality start.”

The Angel left-hander had a more accurate description of a game in which he walked four, struck out two and needed three double plays, including a bases-loaded, third-to-home-to-first relay in the third inning, to prevent a Chicago blowout.

“Basically, I threw terribly,” said Washburn, who received a no-decision. “I feel great, but my mechanics were all over the place. I didn’t have one pitch working. It’s amazing I was able to keep us in the game, but I made some key pitches in some big situations.”

Reserve outfielder Curtis Pride, who strained his right wrist against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night, was put on the 15-day disabled Monday, and the Angels recalled first baseman Casey Kotchman from triple-A Salt Lake.

Pride will undergo an MRI test and be examined by Dr. Norman Zemel, a hand and wrist specialist, today.

Kotchman, considered the Angels’ best position-playing prospect, was batting .268 with one home run and 26 runs batted in at Salt Lake.

Manager Mike Scioscia said closer Francisco Rodriguez, on the disabled list because of a strained right forearm, “felt fine” after throwing a 20-pitch simulated game at Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Monday and, barring any setback, would be activated for Wednesday’s game against the White Sox.... Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko, after the White Sox lost two recent games in Texas, told the Chicago Tribune: “I think [the Rangers] are a good team, one of the best teams we’ve played, if not the best. They’re probably going to be the team to win that division.”
