Precinct needlessly assigned a translator

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that the county registrar of voters is desperate for more Korean-speaking interpreters for Tuesday’s special election. In my nearly 20 years as inspector (head) of my precinct, I have been deluged with voting materials in many languages at each election. I have never needed any of them.

Now I have learned that my precinct has been designated as one needing a Korean translator, and a bilingual member has been added to my precinct board. I called the office of the registrar to report that we have never needed a Korean translator and asked to have the bilingual person removed. I was told no. I tried to emphasize that our precinct is miles from Koreatown and that the prevalent minority in our area is Armenian, to no avail.

So, on election day, we will have a Korean translator who will twiddle his thumbs while some precinct in Koreatown goes without a bilingual worker. Help!
