Loewenstein Quits as School Superintendent

Supt. Sheri Loewenstein resigned last week, making her the third top administrator to leave the fractious Westminster School District since June.

Loewenstein, who was not available for comment Tuesday, has been with the district for 16 years, becoming superintendent in July 2004. Assistant Supt. Jon Archibald resigned in August, and Assistant Supt. Lorie Gonia stepped down in June.

The district has been marked by political strife in recent years, most notably in a 2004 confrontation with the state that ended with the school board reluctantly agreeing to adopt the wording of a state antidiscrimination law that protects transsexuals and others.

Appeals Court Hears Argument on KOCE Suit

Arguments in a state appeals court Tuesday focused on whether a Christian broadcaster has the right to sue the Coast Community College District for rejecting its bid to buy Orange County’s public broadcasting station.

The 4th District Court of Appeal is reviewing a decision to reverse the sale of KOCE-TV to the KOCE-TV Foundation. Attorneys for KOCE and the foundation contend that the Daystar Television Network cannot sue the district, because it used another company name to submit its bid.

A Daystar lawyer said the district was trying to bar televangelists from buying the station.

Vote on County Power Project Is Delayed

Orange County supervisors on Tuesday postponed a vote on a power generation project to serve the Santa Ana Civic Center, saying they wanted to give the county’s financial advisory board a chance to review the proposal.

Supervisors said financing for the project needed to be examined in more detail, particularly whether debt repayments should be stretched over 20 years or a shorter period and whether savings from the project should be used to repay the debt.
