Wizards Outlast Pistons, 120-114

A former Detroit Piston gave the Washington Wizards the boost they needed.

Chucky Atkins, traded shortly before Detroit won the 2004 NBA title, came off the bench to score 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter Friday in the Wizards’ 120-114 double-overtime victory over the Pistons at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Gilbert Arenas scored 39 points as the Wizards ended a five-game losing streak.

Rasheed Wallace scored a season-high 33 points and had 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who lost at home for the first time after starting the season with five straight wins.

Chicago 106, San Antonio 99 -- Chris Duhon scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter at San Antonio as the Bulls’ zone defense shut down the Spurs in the final minutes. Chicago beat San Antonio for the first time since December 2000.

Atlanta 87, Indiana 85 -- The Hawks (2-9) won their second straight despite shooting 36% from the field at Indianapolis. The win ended a seven-game road losing streak that dated to last season and ended the Pacers’ seven-game winning streak in the series. Ron Artest, the Pacers’ top scorer, was deactivated before the game because of a bruised wrist.

Dallas 103, Miami 90 -- Josh Howard scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points for the Mavericks, who extended their winning streak to seven games and ended Miami’s string of six straight home wins. Jason Williams had a season-high 24 points for the Heat.

Minnesota 99, Milwaukee 91 -- Kevin Garnett had 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, doing most of his damage after receiving six stitches in the chin in the third quarter at Minneapolis. Michael Redd scored 28 points and Jamaal Magloire had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks.

Boston 90, Charlotte 89 -- Paul Pierce made a layup with 0.3 of a second left at Boston for the Celtics. He took the inbounds pass with four seconds left and drove down the left side of the lane for the winning basket. He finished with 27 points.

Orlando 104, Portland 89 -- Jameer Nelson scored a season-high 24 points for the Magic, which matched its season-high win streak at two after the victory at Orlando, Fla.

Memphis 86, Houston 81 -- Shane Battier scored 20 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, for the Grizzlies at Memphis, Tenn. The Rockets, without Tracy McGrady, lost their sixth straight.

Golden State 94, Utah 90 -- The Warriors’ Derek Fisher made a three-point shot with 24 seconds left at Salt Lake City. Jason Richardson scored 29 and made two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to clinch it after grabbing the ball off a missed three-pointer by the Jazz’s Deron Williams.

Sacramento 106, Toronto 104 -- Mike Bibby scored 25 points and Bonzi Wells made the winning basket with two seconds left for the Kings at home. Jalen Rose missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have given the Raptors the victory.

Phoenix 92, New Jersey 81 -- Steve Nash scored 25 points and Kurt Thomas had a season-high 18 rebounds for the Suns at Phoenix. Jason Kidd had 25 points for the Nets, who are in the midst of a five-game road trip and dropped their third in a row.

Doug Christie was waived by the Dallas Mavericks, a move that could be a precursor to the 35-year-old veteran guard’s retirement. He had left the team last week to have his surgically repaired left ankle examined by a personal physician.
