Blame, guilt and turmoil in the Catholic Church

Share

The title of Steve Lopez’s column should have been “Lopez Keeps Blurring the Issue” concerning the Catholic Church and its teachings (“Vatican Keeps Blurring the Issue,” Nov. 25).

He takes the opportunity to rehash old issues that both he and The Times have beaten to death and somehow link that to Pope Benedict XVI’s restatement on the long-standing teaching of the church -- sex outside marriage is sinful, whether by clergy or laypeople.

It’s easy to be revisionist when one doesn’t understand what the original positions are. Uninformed non-Catholics and Catholics are presenting distortions as being truth.

Lopez closes his column with “church leaders, including Cardinal Roger Mahony, can be thankful they’ve still got their jobs.” Mahony covered up for criminals who molested children -- many of them. He refuses to turn over files to investigators.

Isn’t Mahony guilty of serious crimes and a candidate for a perp walk and jail time himself? The rest of us would be in the slammer for many years for the evil this man has committed and covered up.
