Desperate for a victory at home, Maryland rendered No. 19 Virginia defenseless with a multifaceted offense that caught the Cavaliers by surprise.

Lance Ball ran for 163 yards and scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and Maryland amassed 570 yards to hand Virginia its first defeat, 45-33, on Saturday.

Sam Hollenbach was 25 for 33 for 320 yards and two touchdowns, and Danny Melendez had nine catches for 125 yards for the Terrapins, who had 33 first downs and punted only twice. The 570 yards were the most given up by the Cavaliers since Georgia Tech had 627 in 2000.

“We weren’t expecting a game like that,” Virginia safety Nate Lyles said. “They had something to prove, and they did it. We just didn’t tighten up.”

Virtually everything worked for Maryland (3-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Led by Ball, the running game produced 250 yards against a unit that had given up an average of 91 yards rushing before Saturday.

No. 6 Florida State 38, Syracuse 14 -- Drew Weatherford passed for 234 yards and three touchdowns, including a 71-yard swing pass to Lorenzo Booker, at home for Florida State. Weatherford, a redshirt freshman making his fourth collegiate start, also scored a touchdown as the Seminoles rolled up a 24-0 lead.

Florida State (4-0) sacked Perry Patterson seven times.

Damien Rhodes, who averaged 120.3 yards rushing before Saturday, was held to 44 yards in 15 carries, but added 70 more with four catches for Syracuse (1-3).

No. 9 Miami 27, South Florida 7 -- Tyrone Moss matched a career high with three touchdowns in Miami. Moss ran for 89 yards and had scoring runs of one and 19 yards in the first quarter, when Miami (3-1) took advantage of three South Florida turnovers to build a 17-0 lead.

Miami scored on four of its first five possessions. South Florida (3-2) avoided the shutout -- which would have been the first in its 93-game history -- with 5:56 left, when Johnny Peyton caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Pat Julmiste.

No. 21 Boston College 38, Ball State 0 -- Backup quarterback Matthew Ryan ran for two first-half scores and threw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter at home for Boston College (4-1).

Ball State (0-4) was missing 15 players suspended earlier in the week for violating an NCAA extra-benefits rule involving the use of textbooks.

North Carolina 31, Utah 17 -- Matt Baker threw two touchdown passes and Tommy Richardson made two fumble recoveries in the fourth quarter at home for North Carolina (2-2).

In the third quarter, on a second and 12 at North Carolina’s 32, Baker’s pass for Jaworski Pollack was intercepted by Eric Weddle, who returned it for a touchdown. But Utah was called for roughing the passer. Four plays later, Baker hit Mike Mason on a 40-yard pass play to the Utah one. Barrington Edwards scored on the next play to extend North Carolina’s lead to 24-14.

Wake Forest 31, Clemson 27 -- Cory Randolph threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Marion with 33 seconds left and Wake Forest rallied to hand Clemson a loss at Winston-Salem, N.C.

The comeback wasn’t sealed until the final play, when Tiger wide receiver Curt Baham was stopped at the three-yard line after a 27-yard gain just as time expired. The officials huddled briefly before agreeing that it was over, setting off a raucous celebration by the Demon Deacons (2-3, 1-1 ACC).
