Fly Waters Near and Far

Barry and Cathy Beck

Stackpole Books

308 pp, $60

“Trout live in beautiful places” is the mantra of fly fishermen. But bonefish, permit, grayling, Atlantic salmon and other fish also live in beautiful places, as seen in this new coffee-table book.

The authors have roamed the world photographing fly anglers and their sometimes exotic quarry.

A where-to, not a how-to, this is a wish book for anglers looking for adventures in places such as Alaska, Russia, Belize and New Zealand.

The stunning photography is supplemented with just enough text to set the scenes. The Becks shoot the beautiful but predictable last cast at sunset, but they also capture colorful salmon flies and portraits, such as those of Charlie Smith, inventor of the Crazy Charlie bonefish fly, and “Diver,” an Alaskan grizzly bear. If you buy this book as a gift for an angler, be prepared to let them go. They will want to get on an airplane, rod in hand.
