Arthur Ollman, director of San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts since its founding 22 years ago, will step down as soon as the institution can find a replacement.

Ollman, 58, announced his retirement to museum staffers at a surprise meeting Monday afternoon. “He is looking to some other challenges,” said museum spokeswoman Courtney Blackwell, who said health was not a factor in the move.

Ollman, who was unavailable for comment Tuesday, built the institution from a one-man show into an institution with 28 full-time staffers.
