Canucks Deliver Loss to Red Wings

Anson Carter scored with 8:46 left to break a tie and the Vancouver Canucks went on to 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night at Detroit.

Vancouver (2-0-1) handed Detroit (3-1-0) its first loss of the season.

Stationed in the slot, Carter one-timed Henrik Sedin’s pass from behind the net past Red Wing goalie Manny Legace for the game winner.

Sedin had a goal and two assists for Vancouver, and Matt Cooke and Richard Park also scored for the Canucks. Park’s goal was into an empty net with two seconds left.

Mikael Samuelsson and Tomas Holmstrom scored for Detroit.

Ottawa 6, Toronto 5 -- Dany Heatley scored the lone goal of the shootout to give the Senators the victory at Ottawa.

Dominik Hasek stopped Kyle Wellwood, Eric Lindros and Jason Allison in the shootout for Ottawa (3-0-0).

Ottawa’s Jason Spezza scored his second goal of the game at 9:27 of the third period to tie it at 5-5.

Florida 3, New York Islanders 1 -- Roberto Luongo made 29 saves, including stopping a penalty shot in the third period, and the Panthers won at Uniondale, N.Y.

Luongo (3-1) posted shutouts in the first two games, stopping 61 shots, and didn’t give up a goal until a 2-1 loss Saturday to Tampa Bay.

Washington 3, New York Rangers 2 -- Rookie Alex Ovechkin scored the winning goal on a power play in the third period, and Olie Kolzig made 30 saves for the Capitals at Washington.

The Capitals killed two penalties late in the game. Kolzig stopped 30 shots.

Buffalo 3, Pittsburgh 2 -- Jochen Hecht jammed in a loose puck from in close with 20 seconds left in overtime to lead the Sabres at Buffalo, N.Y. The Sabres (3-1-0) have opened the season with three straight home wins for the first time since winning their first five in 1984-85.

Boston 4, Tampa Bay 2 -- Brian Leetch scored his first goal for the Bruins and P.J. Axelsson had a goal and an assist at Tampa, Fla. Leetch, signed as a free agent in August, and Axelsson scored in the second period to put Boston ahead, 2-1.

Colorado 7, Calgary 3 -- Marek Svatos had a hat trick and rookie Wojtek Wolski scored his first NHL goal to lead the Avalanche at Denver. Svatos played only four games in his rookie season in 2003-04 because of a shoulder injury.
