A few feet away from ‘Six Feet Under’ days

THERE is life after “Six Feet Under.” Just ask Jill Soloway, an Emmy-nominated writer and co-executive producer on the recently departed HBO series. For the 40-year-old Chicago native, these are good times.

Not only are Soloway and pal Maggie Rowe producing the showcase “Sit ‘n Spin,” in which writers and actors read personal monologues at the Comedy Central Stage in Hollywood, but Soloway also recently published her first book. “Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants: Based on a True Story” pokes fun at society, religion, sex, love and, naturally, the author. On Friday night, Soloway, who lives with 9-year-old son Isaac and “husfriend” Dink Adams in Silver Lake, will read from her memoir at the nearby gift shop Serifos.

Observing Shabbat

I’m a minimalist Jew, but on Friday night I celebrate Shabbat. At sundown we light candles, say the blessing and I don’t turn on my computer for 24 hours.

We’ve been in the neighborhood for four years and love walking up and down Sunset. Saturday mornings we have breakfast at Eat Well. Isaac likes biscuits and eggs; I have lox and bagels. Then we mosey into Serifos, where they’ve got everything from paint-by-number sets to jewelry. The marcasite commitment ring I’m wearing is from there.

We’ll buy pita bread, heirloom tomatoes and tzatziki sauce at the Saturday farmer’s market. And the Cheese Store of Silverlake has good French bread, pink lemonade and goat cheese.

Being fashionable

For clothes I like this little store on Fountain, Matrushka Construction. Beth Ann Whittaker and Laura Howe make amazing things. You can get a designer skirt with cool embroidery for 40 bucks instead of $400, or $4,000. They made Isaac a suit, and my dress for the Emmys.

I love the Army-Navy surplus store Surplus Value Center. They have really good long underwear and multicolored bandanas, cool camo jackets and really, really scary-looking knives. If you’re into that sort of thing.

On Saturday night, it’s dinner at Cliff’s Edge. It serves normal American food -- steaks and soup -- in an absolutely beautiful outdoor garden that’s lighted up and magical. It’s cut out of the hillside, and you feel like you’re far, far away.

Then we’d check out the Improv Olympic or the Upright Citizens Brigade for comedy. Lots of friends from Chicago are there, and you can drop by anytime to catch something wonderful.

The great outdoors

On Sunday morning it’s Brooklyn Bagels on Beverly Boulevard. We get them hot. Then we walk some of the famous Silver Lake steps or hike in the hills to the highest vantage point to see the reservoir.

Later we love to lounge in the backyard on reclining beds and watch TV. Our neighbors might come over for Dink’s pork sandwiches, ribs or chicken, with sauce he gets from Alabama. We have a dream to open a barbecue place -- the Hog Trough.

We watched “Six Feet Under” when it was on and “The Sopranos.” Now it’s “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.” We have an outdoor TV/movie theater built on a shelf. We TiVo everything and never let Isaac see news or bad stories. Real reality is edited out. We like fake reality.
