From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Police Chief William J. Bratton endorsed City Council President Alex Padilla on Tuesday in his race for the 20th Senate District seat in the San Fernando Valley. Bratton credited Padilla with helping to cut crime in his district.

The 1991 Christopher Commission on police reform concluded that “it is unseemly for the chief to use that position to influence the political process.”

Bratton’s spokeswoman, Mary Grady, said the city Ethics Commission had told him that he could endorse a candidate.
