Dorrell, Hayes Were Once on the Same Side

Coach Karl Dorrell will face a familiar foe when UCLA has the ball against Stanford on Saturday. That’s because the defensive coordinator for the Cardinal is former Bruin assistant Tom Hayes, who worked under Terry Donahue from 1980 to 1988.

Hayes was co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach when Dorrell was a receiver for the Bruins in the mid-1980s.

“He’s an excellent football coach,” Dorrell said. “ ... It should be a fun game.”

Hayes was a coach for four UCLA teams that won or shared Pacific 10 Conference titles and helped the Bruins to a 7-1 record in bowl games.

This season, however, Hayes’ Stanford defense ranks among the worst in the Pac-10. The Cardinal, which gives up 436.7 yards a game, is eighth against the pass and seventh against the run.

But Dorrell said the Cardinal has been playing sound defense recently, the key to Stanford’s 3-1 record in the Pac-10.

“They look nowhere close to what they looked like early in the season,” Dorrell said about Stanford, which lost to UC Davis in its second game. “Their defense is doing some great things right now and at a time when you want your defense to play its best football.”

Last week, Stanford led Arizona State, 45-7, in the third quarter and won, 45-35, after the Sun Devils scored 21 fourth-quarter points. Nose tackle Babatunde Oshinowo recorded a career-high three sacks and the Cardinal finished with seven.
