Israel Museum receives $12 million for photography
The Israel Museum in Jerusalem has announced that longtime patrons and collectors Harriette and Noel Levine have made a gift of $12 million through their foundation to the museum’s department of photography.
The gift -- which the Israel Museum calls the largest single monetary gift for photography at a museum -- will support acquisitions, research, exhibitions, publications and departmental operations.
In 1994, the New York-based arts philanthropists gave the museum a collection of 85 signed works by American photographer and photojournalist Andre Kertesz. They are also donors to New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Levines are members of the Photography Council of the J. Paul Getty Museum.
The Israel Museum has also announced another gift to its photography department: a personal album by Scottish photographer James Graham featuring early photographs of Jerusalem taken between 1853 and 1857 as well as handwritten notes by the photographer.
The album, donated by Katja B. Goldman and Michael W. Sonnenfeldt, is a joint gift to the museum and the Center for Jewish History.
