Imogen Heap
“Speak for Yourself”
RCA Victor Records
Artist info: Known for quirky vocals and exquisite trip-hop arrangements, Heap hit in America at age 18 with her solo debut, “I, Megaphone,” then went on to form alterna-pop band Frou Frou with Madonna producer Guy Sigsworth in 2001.
Back story: To build the home studio where she wrote, recorded and produced “Speak,” she remortgaged her London apartment, then self-released the album on her own imprint, Megaphonic Records.
Influences: Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Bjork
Trivia: Heap crossed into the mainstream when her vocoder-heavy ballad “Hide & Seek” was played during last year’s season finale of “The OC” and shot to No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 Download chart.
