Richard Loring, 86; Composer Wrote Songs for Movies

Songwriter Richard Loring, 86, died Aug. 28 of cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his friend Fred Stuart.

Loring wrote songs with lyricist Diane Lampert for several Universal films, including “Operation Petticoat” and the animated “The Snow Queen.” He also wrote “Biddle-Dee-Dee” for Disney’s 1960 movie “Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks With a Circus.”

Loring obituary -- The obituary of composer Richard Loring in Thursday’s California section said he was 86. He was 88. The article also said he died of cancer. Although he had cancer, the cause of death was congestive heart failure, according to his friend Bill Jacobs.

More recently, Loring was a producer for the Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event, or STAGE, the Los Angeles HIV/AIDS benefit that raises money for AIDS services, charities and clinics.

Robert Patrick Mellace, 87, former political editor and associate editor of the Charleston Daily Mail, died Tuesday at his home in Charleston, W. Va., from Alzheimer’s disease, said his daughter. He joined the Daily Mail as political editor in 1953 and later was named associate editor, retiring in 1980.
