A Port Hueneme man fatally shot his estranged wife in front of their daughter before killing himself, Oxnard police reported Monday.

Jose Zavala, 37, waited outside the Oxnard home of Ana Macias, 35, late Sunday until she returned from the movies, Oxnard Police Sgt. Jim Seitz said.

Zavala followed Macias into the residence, where an argument ensued followed by gunshots, Seitz said. The couple’s 16-year-old daughter witnessed the shootings, he said.

Zavala and Macias were pronounced dead at the scene about 11:20 p.m., authorities said.

An autopsy Monday showed that Macias had been shot in the torso multiple times, and Zavala died from a single self-inflicted shot to the chest, coroner’s officials said.

Residents of the 4100 block of South G Street said they did not know Macias and her daughter, who had moved into the home a week ago. Two other families live on the property.

George Galavis Jr., 23, said he was watching a movie when he heard what he thought were firecrackers going off. He said he realized something was wrong when a young woman came out of the house screaming that someone had been shot.
