From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A man who crashed his pickup through a gate and drove across two active runways at Palm Springs International Airport remained in critical condition at Desert Regional Medical Center on Monday after being shot by police.

Michael Broderick, 39, faces multiple counts of attempted murder of a police officer after the incident early Sunday. Broderick pulled his pickup in front of a jet, forcing it to stop, then broke a door handle while trying to enter the plane, a Palm Springs Police Department spokesperson said.

Authorities said Broderick ignored repeated commands by police to surrender and led them on a short chase that ended when he was shot by officers and bitten by a police dog.
