An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was killed Friday in Palmdale when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle at an intersection, authorities said.

The officer, whose identity was withheld pending notification of relatives, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, said Lt. Robert Jonsen of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which patrols Palmdale.

Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton said the officer, a six-year department veteran, was unable to stop at a red light for unknown reasons. He was the fourth law enforcement officer in Los Angeles County killed in the last eight days.

“This is just a tragedy, with so many officers having died in such a short amount of time,” Bratton said.

Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Wilms, 38, was found dead Thursday at the department’s Industry station after accidentally shooting himself while cleaning his weapon.

Deputy Maria Cecilia Rosa, 30, was shot to death early Tuesday while leaving a friend’s house in Long Beach. Officials said that robbery was a possible motive and that they were looking for two suspects.

Deputy Pierre Bain, 45, a 14-year veteran, was killed March 23 in an on-duty motorcycle accident in Lancaster.
