Sorenstam Can’t Get Close to Goal With 70

Annika Sorenstam closed the Kraft Nabisco Championship with a two-under 70 Sunday -- her best round of the tournament -- and tied for sixth with Hee-Won Han, seven shots out of the lead.

Still, a top-10 finish wasn’t what Sorenstam was aiming for. She has repeatedly stated that winning the Grand Slam is her goal and walked away from this week disappointed.

“I want to win majors,” she said. “I’ve come so far and achieved so much in my career, that’s what I gear up for. I’m disappointed about this week, because that’s what I live for. But luckily there are three more.”

Sorenstam said she will regroup and focus on the rest of the season. In 2004, when she first went public with her Grand Slam plan, she didn’t win the Nabisco, but she went on to win eight times, including the LPGA Championship and the Women’s British Open to complete the career Grand Slam.

This week’s disappointment was even tougher to swallow, she said, because the leaders never pulled too far from the pack.

“I left a lot of strokes out there,” she said. “I feel like I can find five shots today and probably five shots every day. That’s 15 shots. That’s the way I look at things.”

Angela Park ended her amateur career with a final-round 74 and by finishing in a tie for 15th at two over.

“In golf you’re never satisfied,” said Park, 17, a senior at Torrance High who will turn professional and play the Futures Tour beginning later this month. “You could always do better. Top 20 was my goal and I achieved it, so I’m pretty happy.”

She couldn’t turn pro before the Kraft Nabisco because she was playing on a sponsor exemption given to amateurs, but that didn’t stop her from thinking about the $26,710 that Yuri Fudoh made by tying for 15th.

“Gosh darn,” she said. “I could have bought a car with that money.”
