Jimmy Rollins would trade a hit for a win.

Rollins stretched his hitting streak to 38 games, but the Philadelphia Phillies remained winless. Yadier Molina’s two-out RBI single off Tom Gordon in the ninth inning lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night at Philadelphia.

Rollins kept up his pursuit of Joe DiMaggio’s major league record 56-game hitting streak with a double in the first inning, and finished two for four with two doubles.

“I’d rather do it in a winning fashion,” Rollins said.

Skip Schumaker hit his first career homer and Albert Pujols again homered for the Cardinals.

Washington 9, New York 5 -- Ryan Zimmerman’s first major league homer sent the game to extra innings. Alfonso Soriano’s lack of hustle sent him to the bench.

Soriano was pulled by National Manager Frank Robinson for not running out a popup during the 10-inning victory at New York. “That’s the rule around here,” Robinson said. “They’ve all been told. It’s been said more than one time.”

Soriano popped up to the catcher in fair territory in the sixth and hardly budged from the batter’s box. He said he thought the ball might fade into foul territory but said Robinson’s decision was fair and that he wasn’t surprised by it.

Houston 6, Florida 5 -- Lance Berkman and Preston Wilson each hit two-run homers for the Astros at Houston.

Craig Biggio had two hits and scored two runs as the defending NL champions took two of three in their opening series with the Marlins.

Biggio had an RBI single in the second, stole his 408th career base, then scored on Berkman’s single to reach 1,700 career runs. His two hits left him two shy of 2,800.

Milwaukee 3, Pittsburgh 2 -- Prince Fielder hit a looping single that scored Geoff Jenkins in the eighth inning at Milwaukee.

A highly regarded prospect who became the Brewers’ starting first baseman when the team traded Lyle Overbay in the off-season, Fielder was 0 for 9 with seven strikeouts when he walked in the second to reach base for the first time this season.

Fielder, the son of former major leaguer Cecil Fielder, was dropped from fifth to seventh in the lineup Wednesday by Brewer Manager Ned Yost, who wanted to take some pressure off him.

Cincinnati 8, Chicago 6 -- Ken Griffey moved ahead of two Yankees with his first home run of the season at Cincinnati. His solo shot was his 537th, breaking a tie with Mickey Mantle for 12th on the career list. It also provided his 1,538th RBI, moving him ahead of Joe DiMaggio for 31st on that list.

Each team hit three homers in the majors’ most homer-friendly ballpark -- nine went out overall during the two-game series.

Arizona 4, Colorado 2 -- Orlando Hernandez won in his Diamondback debut, striking out eight in five innings at Denver.

Acquired from the World Series champion Chicago White Sox during the off-season, Hernandez gave up two runs, six hits and two walks. He struck out Matt Holliday three times.

Greg Aquino, Terry Mulholland, Brandon Lyon, Luis Vizcaino and Jose Valverde finished, with Valverde getting three outs for the save.

San Francisco 3, San Diego 1 -- Barry Bonds reached base three times without getting a hit and scored once at San Diego. Although Bonds was booed every time he came to bat, he took less grief from the fans than he did on Monday, when he was booed mercilessly and had a syringe thrown at him.

Matt Morris won his Giant debut, holding the Padres to five hits and a run in 6 1/3 innings.
