Martinez, Mets Win Face-Off, 3-1

Pedro Martinez escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in New York’s 3-1 victory over the host Washington Nationals on Wednesday night for the Mets’ fifth straight win.

The teams played under a season-long warning to stop the beanballs after the Nationals’ Jose Guillen declared “enough is enough” when Martinez hit him twice in the same game last week.

Martinez (2-0) struck out Jose Vidro for the first out of the sixth to bring up Guillen with the bases loaded in a one-run game. After Martinez’s first pitch was a ball, catcher Paul Lo Duca called time and went to the mound.

Three pitches later, Guillen hit a 91-mph pitch to the shortstop on one hop, and Martinez got out of the inning with a routine double play to end the Nationals’ last real threat.

Arizona 5, Colorado 4 -- Luis Gonzalez drove in the go-ahead run with his 499th double and the Diamondbacks rallied to end the Rockies’ four-game winning streak in front of 18,664, the smallest home crowd in the Diamondbacks’ nine-year history.

San Diego 7, Florida 2 -- Adrian Gonzalez went four for five with two RBIs and Chris Young gave up one hit in six innings for the Padres’ second straight win at Miami.

Miguel Cabrera hit his second homer of the season for the Marlins, who lost their fifth game in a row and are off to a 1-6 start.

Chicago 4, Cincinnati 1 -- Greg Maddux gave up three hits and a run in six innings at home to get his 320th career win. The Reds had five errors, three by third baseman Edwin Encarnacion, to help the Cubs to a 3-0 lead.

Cincinnati has another concern. Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. left the game in the fourth inning with stiffness in the back of his right knee. He walked in the first and struck out in the top of the fourth before Ryan Freel replaced him in center in the bottom of the inning.

Griffey said the injury wasn’t serious, but he didn’t know if he would play today against the Cubs.

Philadelphia 7, Atlanta 5 -- Aaron Rowand hit a two-run homer, Pat Burrell homered and the visiting Phillies won for the second time this season. The Phillies, who lost six of their first seven games, jumped ahead, 4-0, in the second inning and held on at the end.

St. Louis 8, Milwaukee 3 -- Cardinal Jim Edmonds hit a three-run double and scored on a pair of errors in the fifth inning. St. Louis is 2-0 at new Busch Stadium after going 50-31 both on the road and at old Busch last season.

Houston at San Francisco, ppd., rain -- The series opener between the Astros and Giants was rained out again, the first time in 45 years there have been back-to-back rainouts in San Francisco. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader today and will make up the game May 8.
