Field of Nine Is Scheduled for $100,000 La Puente Stakes

Share

After the excitement of the Santa Anita Derby a week ago, things will be quieter today in Arcadia except for a two-day pick six carry-over of $376,859.

The main event on the 10-race program is the $100,000 La Puente Stakes, an ungraded affair at one mile on turf for 3-year-olds.

The field of nine includes only two horses who have a win on the Santa Anita turf course in 2006.

Zann, a son of Dynaformer owned by Mr. and Mrs. W.K. Warren Jr. and trained by Mike Machowsky, beat maidens by a nose at 10-1 on March 26. The victory came a little more than two months after Scootin George had defeated California-bred maidens by three lengths in his first race on the lawn for owner Benjamin Warren.

The only other member of the cast with a local turf victory is Stratham. He won the Pinjara for owner Jerry Jamgotchian and trainer Tim Yakteen in his U.S. debut last Oct. 30, then was fourth in the Pasadena in his first start as a 3-year-old on March 18.

Race of the day: Teammate, who won the Bonnie Miss at Gulfstream Park by six lengths in her first start on Lasix on March 5, will try for a second consecutive Grade II victory in the $150,000 Comely at Aqueduct.

One for the road: Spanish Chestnut looked good winning in his first race of 2006 on March 10 at Golden Gate Fields and can make it two in a row in the $400,000 Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland in the eighth race. The 4-year-old Horse Chestnut gelding owns a win over the track for owners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith and trainer Patrick Biancone. Julien Leparoux will ride in the Grade II at seven furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Can You Imagine in the second, Cigar Pal and Ice Lemon And Rum in the second and Proxenia, Soothsay, Just Em and Arlene in the third.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 1/230. Money: (previous day/meet total): $4.80/$1,314. Total money bet: $1,364.
