The Angels’ arc light of triumph

April 16, 1932: With the rallying cry, “Turn on the lights, the boys are tired of being alone!” The Times announced that Los Angeles’ Wrigley Field would inaugurate night baseball games at the stadium. “The fans haven’t been wearing off the winter’s accumulation of rust on the turnstiles for the day games, so the powers that be at Wrigley Field will see if they like their baseball at night any better,” The Times said. Three days later, the Angels (or Seraphs, as The Times also called them) “rang curfew” for the Sacramento Senators, winning 8-3. The Times reported that 3,500 fans, double the number that attended day games, came out to see L.A.’s team, which looked “much better under the subdued glow of the arc lights.”
