Filly Tries to Carry the Day

Share

Cambiocorsa is hoping the $100,000 Las Cienegas Handicap, which is part of a pick six with a three-day carry-over of $1,126,445, stays on the turf today at Santa Anita.

The 4-year-old Avenue Of Flags filly has owned the hillside, winning all six of her races at the approximately 6 1/2 -furlong distance, including four in a row during the current winter-spring meet.

A switch to dirt, which seems far less likely given the positive weather forecast today, would not be good news for the California-bred. In a half dozen main track starts, Cambiocorsa is winless. In her last two dirt races, the gray finished eighth and 12th, beaten by a combined 41 1/2 lengths.

Even on grass, Cambiocorsa will be pressed to keep her winning streak alive. The field includes Lock And Key, who was second against males in her U.S. debut on the course on March 24, and the improving Sandra’s Rose.

Owned by Stonestreet Stables LLC and trained by Mike Machowsky, Sandra’s Rose, a 4-year-old Old Trieste filly, has won three of four on the hillside, including her last two. She will be ridden by Martin Pedroza.

Pussycat Doll is an unknown on turf, but she would be the one to beat on the main track. The Real Quiet filly won the La Brea, a Grade I stakes race, by 5 3/4 lengths the last time she sprinted on the main track and has trained well since a poor effort in the La Canada on Feb. 12. She is trained by Bob Baffert for owner-breeder Mike Pegram and will be ridden by Garrett Gomez.

Race of the day: Nonchalant, who hasn’t been out since beating maidens by 7 3/4 lengths on Sept. 17 at Calder, will return for trainer Emanuel Tortora in the seventh race today at Gulfstream Park. Rajiv Maragh will ride the 3-year-old Montbrook gelding for owners-breeders Toni Anconoa and Steve Tortora in the $33,000 allowance at six furlongs.

One for the road: Lessur won big on March 18 and can come right back against slightly tougher competition in the first race today at Golden Gate Fields. Apprentice Luis Martinez will ride the 5-year-old In Excess gelding for Thoreson Thoroughbreds and trainer Gloria Buckridge in the $5,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Trevite in the third, Souvenir Rose, Hescayerlessandhot and Yudaman Man in the fourth and Natural Phenomenon, Emperoroftheraces, Resident Authority and Souvenir Zone in the fifth.
