Throngs welcome President Harrison

April 22, 1891: When President Benjamin Harrison arrived at the Wolfskill depot, the city went all-out to welcome him. “In and about the grounds people were wedged in so close that breathing was almost impossible,” The Times said. “Every fence and projection held people, who clung on for dear life as they raised themselves a few feet from the ground to get a better view of the expected train.”
When Harrison’s train pulled in, “10,000 voices sent forth a shout that could be heard several blocks from the depot. In a few seconds the news spread over town, and every bell on public buildings rang out a peal of welcome, and the firing of cannon made things lively for thirty minutes.”
The Times said: “Not a single accident of any description occurred yesterday. Not a single drunken man was seen on the streets yesterday.”
