Houston 7, at San Diego 1: Craig Biggio homered twice and Brandon Backe gave up one run and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings to help hand the Padres their third straight loss. Biggio and Mike Lamb hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth off starter Woody Williams (4-3). Todd Walker, acquired Monday from the Chicago Cubs, had a rough debut for the Padres, committing two throwing errors in his first start at third base since 1997.

New York 6, at Florida 5: The Mets took advantage of four errors by the Marlins, and closer Billy Wagner, who blew the save Tuesday, escaped a ninth-inning jam by striking out the side with two on base. Florida’s four errors led to three unearned runs and a 6-0 deficit by the third inning.

at San Francisco 8, Washington 6: Moises Alou homered, hit a two-run double and also singled in a run, Jason Schmidt (8-7) struck out 10, and the Giants ended a nine-game losing streak, their longest in 10 years.

at Colorado 8, Milwaukee 2: Byung-Hyun Kim (7-6) gave up one run and seven hits in a career-high eight innings and Todd Helton homered and drove in three runs.

Atlanta 3, at Pittsburgh 2: Edgar Renteria hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for the Braves.

Arizona at Chicago, ppd: The game was rained out and will be made up today as part of a doubleheader.
