Japan Gets U.S. Beef Shipment
The first shipment of U.S. beef since Japan lifted a six-month-old import ban arrived today, officials said.
The shipment arrived at Narita airport, just east of Tokyo, said Yuji Kitamura, an official at the airport’s animal quarantine office. Public broadcaster NHK said earlier that about 5 tons of American beef was expected today, and inspections would start as early as Tuesday.
Japan lifted the ban on U.S. beef imports, imposed because of concerns about mad-cow disease, late last month after Japanese inspectors toured 35 U.S. meat-processing plants.
The ban was imposed in January when inspectors found prohibited animal parts in a veal shipment from New York.
