Politics, crime are hurting Inglewood

Share

Re “Hungry for a supermarket,” Opinion, Aug. 9

Communities such as Inglewood have trouble recruiting commitments from national business systems for two reasons: politics and crime. Politics because power, influence, control and money dictate the level and spirit of cooperation from the political structure. Crime because tremendous stocks of inventory disappear from shelves and customers get robbed in the parking lots. Shuttle service between a business and the police department is not sustainable.

Neither is an unofficial substation logical in every big business operation.

Inglewood has made great strides in the last few years to entice a number of national retailers to the city. It also has lost a number of chains. Erin Aubry Kaplan needs to recognize that although it’s fun to criticize others for not spending their money according to her priorities, it is not immoral to look for a return on one’s investment.
