Martinez Hurts Leg as Mets Are Routed

Pedro Martinez felt a twinge in his calf before the game and suffered the effects during a miserable first inning.

The New York Mets could only hope a bad outing was the worst of his problems.

Martinez strained his right calf and departed after giving up six runs Monday night as the host Philadelphia Phillies went on to romp, 13-0.

The Mets said the three-time Cy Young winner felt the strain while warming up.

Mets Manager Willie Randolph said Martinez left for New York and would be examined today.

Randolph wanted to wait until he had test results to decide whether Martinez would make his next start.

“He felt a twinge out there, but he felt like if it got loose, he could go out there and give us what he had,” Randolph said.

Cole Hamels (5-6) pitched eight scoreless innings for the Phillies.

The Phillies said after the game that closer Tom Gordon has soreness in his right shoulder and will sit out the rest of the four-game series.
