A county resident has become the second Californian to die from a hantavirus infection in the last two months.

A youth living in the Antelope Valley died Aug. 6 of respiratory failure due to the virus. Investigators will test deer mice, whose droppings are common sources of infection, in areas where the youth visited.

The boy’s name and hometown were not released.

Another Los Angeles County resident, a 52-year-old man, died in July from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after camping with his family in Mono County near the Nevada state line.
