Preserving the missions

Re “Church-State Issues Topple Proposal to Restore Missions,” Aug. 17

It breaks my heart to read that California has interrupted the process by which the voters would be allowed to decide on funding for the restoration of our crumbling missions. These missions should not be a pawn in the state-versus-church issue. They are vestiges of history, built roughly a day’s journey from one to another, and should be protected with the same fervor afforded our parks, lakes and Early California homes. By restoring our missions, we can salvage tourism dollars and share our cultural beginnings. These missions are historical landmarks, not mere properties of faith. They belong to all of us, and need to be respected and preserved at any cost.
