Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) canceled a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday after reports that 14 people had been killed in three days of clashes there between followers of two presidential candidates.

The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa, Congo’s capital, asked Obama to suspend his visit, which had been scheduled for Thursday. Embassy officials said they were unable to escort him on his planned visit to Goma.

Also on Tuesday, the United Nations called for an end to the fighting in the country, formerly known as Zaire.
