Nearly 900 marijuana plants, some as tall as 14 feet, were uprooted this week in Merced County in raids by sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement officials.

Some of the plants were nearly ready for harvest. “These looked like sequoias,” said Sgt. Vern Warnke, supervisor of the Sheriff’s Tactical and Reconnaissance team. “It took all eight of us to haul the stuff out.” The caretaker escaped.
