Manatee Makes Journey North to Cape Cod

From Times Wire Reports

A manatee surpassed the previous confirmed northern boundary for the species when it reached Cape Cod this week, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which has been tracking the animals for decades.

“It’s swimming, eating and ducking into harbors to drink fresh water,” USGS spokeswoman Catherine Puckett said.

Manatees, which are endangered, mostly keep to the warm water off Florida, where about 3,000 of them live. Experts said even though temperatures had been warm in the Atlantic, it was too soon to tell if manatees had been extending their range because of global warming.
