Camarillo man is killed by pickup on PCH
A 20-year-old Camarillo man was struck and killed by a motorist when he stepped into the northbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway near the Los Angeles County line, authorities said Thursday.
According to witnesses, Trevor Donald Beattie had stopped by Neptune’s Nest restaurant about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and asked to borrow a customer’s cellphone before walking out onto the busy road.

Traffic accident: An article in the Dec. 8 California section about a Camarillo man killed when he was struck by a motorist on Pacific Coast Highway gave the name of the restaurant Neptune’s Net as Neptune’s Nest.
He was then struck by a Ford pickup driven by Brett Andrew Lasure of Torrance and died at the scene, said Steve Reid, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. Beattie’s van was parked about a mile away, and it was unknown why he tried to cross the road, Reid said.
Authorities are investigating the possibility that Beattie was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of his death. Results from toxicology tests will not be available for several months.
Beattie was a regular at County Line Beach, a favorite spot among surfers at the border of Ventura and L.A. counties.
“He was an amazing, amazing surfer,” said a restaurant employee who asked not to be identified. “Everyone talked about him, like he would be the next big thing.”
