Special to The Times

Looking for a hip, affordable place to stay in ski country? Sharp, modern

and affordable are common in Europe (the result of chalet overdose, perhaps) but not in North America. We’ve ferreted out some interesting U.S. choices for this winter.

Fun

The Block at Tahoe

4143 Cedar Ave., South Lake Tahoe, Calif.;

(888) 544-4055,

www.theblockattahoe.com.

Rates: $79-$249

*

The Block at Big Bear

39471 Big Bear Blvd., Big Bear Lake, Calif.;

(909) 866-6570, www.theblockatbigbear.com.

Rates: $119-$309

The vibe

The establishments, the creation of pro snowboarder Marc Frank Montoya and Vegas hotelier Liko S. Smith, tap into a serious snowboarder vibe; if you’re a skier, you might find that anti-two-plank attitude dated. Interesting fusion of modern and marketing (rooms are sponsored by companies, including Spy and Boost Mobile) and the fact that there are CD players, free wireless access and game consoles in each room makes a night at the Block unique.

Skiing/riding

You can’t go wrong staying in South Lake Tahoe, which is home to world-class resorts, including Heavenly and Sierra-at-Tahoe.

If you choose Big Bear, be ready to ride-park: Both Big Bear resort and Snow Summit cater to pipe and park riders.

Stylish

The Sky Hotel

709 E. Durant Ave., Aspen, Colo.;

(800) 882-2582,

(970) 925-6760,

www.theskyhotel.com

Rates: $489-$700

The vibe

Hip and modern with custom furniture in the lobby and bar (check out those chairs). Prime location at the base of Aspen Mountain. Rooms are comfortable but a bit small. The Sky’s unpretentious attitude and clean, comfortable lines make it a favorite of pro skiers and snowboarders. The clientele, mostly young, wealthy hipsters, appreciates the many amenities: evening wine receptions, free WiFi access, pet-friendly rooms.

Skiing/riding

With four mountains to choose from -- Aspen Mountain, Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass -- you’ll be spoiled for choice. The ski areas are easily reached by way of Aspen’s free buses.

Cheap

Hostel X

3315 McCollister Drive, Teton Village, Wyo.;

(307) 733-3415,

www.hostelx.com.

Rates: $58-$70

The vibe

The accommodations are strictly Spartan, with bunks for four. But step in the common areas and a new world emerges. Hostel X is ski-bum central, with the kind of laid-back vibe and underground stoke found only in places where every guest is there for one reason: to challenge Jackson Hole’s famed steeps. The common spaces here shine: nooks for playing chess or reading, a massive sitting area in front of a similarly massive fireplace and ski and snowboard tuning facilities.

Skiing/riding

Although Jackson’s tram is out of commission this winter, this still is one of the best mountains in North America for serious steeps. In fact, it could be the best in North America. Go there and decide for yourself.
