Vietnam: French cuisine lingers

Share

“WE recently returned from a trip to Vietnam, which still offers some excellent French restaurants. The most outstanding was Augustin Restaurant in downtown Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), a half-block from the Sheraton. From the outside it is easy to miss. But the interior ambience is very pleasant, with rattan chairs and an elegant bar. A dinner for five with appetizers, main course and chocolate souffles, ordered on arrival, ran $50, including wine and gratuity.”

Most meals under $10.

California: Like a fish out of water

“FRESHIES in South Lake Tahoe offers a diverse menu that includes exceptional seafood specials, many vegetarian options and even great ribs ($9.95). It’s casual and looks like someplace you’d find in a small Hawaiian town. Save room for the unbelievable desserts, especially the coconut cream pie.”

Meals from $3.25 (tacos).
