Kaimana Running at Santa Anita

Share

Three days before 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo makes his comeback in the $300,000 Strub Stakes, another horse owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs will return at Santa Anita.

Kaimana, a 4-year-old Tale Of The Cat filly, will make her first start since May 29 in today’s seventh race, a $52,000 allowance at six furlongs.

Purchased for $130,000 in 2003, Kaimana has won two of four. The only time she was worse than second was on grass in her most recent start; she finished seventh in an 11-horse field in the Manhattan Beach Handicap at Hollywood Park.

This will be the first appearance at Santa Anita for Kaimana since she earned her maiden victory in her second career race. She beat Donna’s Doll by 1 1/2 lengths on March 17.

Corey Nakatani will ride Kaimana for the first time today and will face Sterling Cat, Victory Spy, Hot Attraction, Resident Alien, Mother, Feel Ridge and likely favorite Notre Dame.

Owned by breeder Goncalo Borges Torrealba’s Stud T N T and trained by Bobby Frankel, Notre Dame lost by a nose in her U.S. debut on Jan. 5. She won two of five in Brazil last year.

Race of the day: Coronado’s Vision, who broke her maiden cleverly in her last start on Nov. 12 at Churchill Downs, will try for a repeat in her first against winners in the ninth race this afternoon at Gulfstream Park. Mike Smith will ride the 3-year-old Coronado’s Quest filly for owner-breeder Bruce Lunsford and trainer Frank Brothers in the $33,000 allowance at one mile. The race is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $90,583.

One for the road: The Village Vicar should get plenty of pace to chase in the eighth race today at Aqueduct and can be along in time in the $45,000 optional claimer at six furlongs. The Village Vicar -- a 3-year-old son of Vicar and already a winner over Aqueduct’s inner track -- will have Orlando Mojica aboard. Exotically speaking: A pick three using Fantastic Spain and Misto Quente in the second, Walking Solo, Mesa Magic and Lainies Lion in the third and Niagara Causeway in the fourth.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 2/73. Money: (previous day/meet total): $10.60/$483. Total money bet: $444.
