The price tag for Iraq

Re “Bush’s Bill for War Is Rising,” Feb. 3

With the national debt at $8 trillion and growing daily, and a trade deficit of more than $700 billion, Bush’s desire to take $39 million from programs for the poor and give the rich a $70-million tax cut, while asking $70 billion more for Iraq, is not just abject fiscal irresponsibility. It’s totally insane.

If a business operated this way, it would be bankrupt. If a person operated this way, he would be homeless. If a country operates this way, it’s on the path to self-destruction.

If it truly will cost $2 trillion for the war in Iraq, we could have instead given every person in Iraq about $75,000 (considering a population of roughly 26 million). It might have made everyone happier.

Once more the president has asked Congress (and us) for more billions for Iraq. Why not, as was done during World War I and World War II, just issue interest-bearing war bonds, thus permitting those who agree with him and his war to profit and excusing those who disagree the unpleasant chore of paying for his folly?
