Maybe the Atlantic Coast Conference is more than just a two-team race after all.

Ashleigh Newman made a long desperation three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, and Marissa Coleman scored five straight points afterward to help sixth-ranked Maryland beat No. 1 North Carolina, 98-95, at Chapel Hill, N.C., on Thursday night, ending the Tar Heels’ 30-game home winning streak.

Crystal Langhorne scored 25 points to lead the Terrapins (22-2, 9-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final 12 minutes of regulation to win here for the first time in a decade.

And for a team hovering in the shadows of top-ranked North Carolina (22-1, 9-1) and No. 2 Duke -- where the Terrapins travel Monday -- it was clear just how big this win was for Brenda Frese’s team.

“Our program took a step forward tonight,” the coach said.

It appeared that the Tar Heels would remain the nation’s last unbeaten team in Division I -- men’s or women’s -- despite a shaky shooting day from leading scorer Ivory Latta, thanks to the play of Camille Little and Erlana Larkins.

Little had 24 points on six-for-six shooting after Latta picked up her third foul in the first half.

Larkins had 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five blocks and three steals in 32 minutes but didn’t play the overtime because of leg cramps.

Latta finished with 21 points on seven-for-20 shooting.

No. 10 Purdue 76, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 52 -- Katie Gearlds scored 20 points, Aya Traore had 17 and the Boilermakers (19-3) gave up one basket in the last 7:42 as they closed with a 19-4 run to win their 16th straight home game against an Indiana school.

No. 14 Stanford 81, UC Santa Barbara 47 -- Jillian Harmon had 17 points and a season-high 11 rebounds at Palo Alto, and the Cardinal (17-5) won its fourth straight and 11th of 12 overall.

The Gauchos (11-9) have lost all six of their road games against non-conference opponents.

No. 15 Michigan St. 84, No. 11 Minnesota 61 -- Freshman Aisha Jefferson had a season-high 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals for the Spartans (18-7, 8-4 Big Ten Conference), who grabbed a quick 13-0 lead and dominated the first 27 minutes at East Lansing, Mich., en route to their fourth straight win.

No. 16 Arizona State 77, Oregon State 67 -- Kristen Kovesdy scored 14 points at Corvallis, Ore., for the Sun Devils (19-5, 10-4 Pacific 10 Conference), who outrebounded the Beavers, 37-24, en route to their fifth straight win.

No. 21 Boston College 57, Georgia Tech 55 -- Kindyll Dorsey made a baseline jump shot with 7.8 seconds to play and finished with a team-high 18 points at home for the Eagles (18-6, 5-4 ACC), who won their sixth straight.

No. 22 Vanderbilt 64, Arkansas 59 -- Liz Sherwood, the nation’s leader in field-goal shooting, was seven for nine and finished with 16 points in Nashville to lead Vanderbilt (17-7, 6-4 Southeastern Conference).

No. 24 Louisiana Tech 75, Nevada 34 -- Aarica Ray-Boyd scored 20 points, and Ty Moore had 18 points and a career-high 21 rebounds at Ruston, La., to lead the Lady Techsters (17-4, 9-1 Western Athletic Conference) in scoring for the third straight game.
