Google Inc. said the U.S. government’s demand to turn over information on search queries would undermine trust among its customers and disclose company trade secrets.

In a filing in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Google said the government had failed to show that it needed the information. The government says it needs the data to prove that the 1998 Child Online Protection Act is more effective than software in blocking harmful material.
