Re “Lawmaker Presses Case for Zinfandel,” Feb. 13

In reading the piece about a state senator pushing for Zinfandel as the official state wine, the article mentions that Zinfandel has “no known European homeland” and that its “origins have been shrouded in mystery.”

According to the book “Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy,” a red wine varietal known as primitivo, which is grown in Puglia, has been genetically linked to Zinfandel. I think it’s safe to say that Zinfandel was brought here by the Italians.
