Bills Seek to Ease Cellphone Tracking

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Two cellphone-related bills are being drafted in the wake of an incident in western Riverside County last month, when a company did not quickly assist in locating a 10-month-old boy abducted in a stolen vehicle with a cellphone inside.

Assemblyman John Benoit’s (R-Palm Desert) legislation would help law enforcement and wireless companies communicate more quickly.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia’s (R-Cathedral City) bill would allow cellphone buyers to sign a form upon purchasing a phone that permits the phone’s tracking data to be released in an emergency.
