Justine Johnston, 84; Acting Career Included Original Broadway Role in ‘Follies’

Justine Johnston, 84, a veteran actress who was the original Heidi Schiller in Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical “Follies” in which she sang “One More Kiss,” died of a stroke Friday at Olympia Medical Center in West Hollywood.

In her more than 60-year show business career, Johnston appeared in numerous Broadway shows, including “The Pajama Game,” “Me and My Girl,” “Irene,” “Molly,” “Angel” and “Sondheim: A Musical Tribute.”

She spent most of her career on the road, with touring Broadway productions, including “Milk and Honey,” “Lend Me a Tenor,” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

Johnston, who served on the governing body of Actors Equity for 39 years, also appeared frequently on television, in commercials and in films, including “Arthur,” “9 1/2 Weeks” and “Fatal Attraction.”

Born in Evanston, Ill., Johnston graduated from the Goodman Theatre School and later performed throughout the mid-Pacific during World War II.
